Hi,

This weekend was pretty relaxed. It was cold and poured with rain, so I stayed inside and watched movies and hung out with my neighbours. Yesterday I went to a different church called 'City Harvest' with the foxfires. It was a praise and worship service so there wasn't a sermon, but I really enjoyed it. First they had a big block of worship, starting with the song 'Water you turned into wine' (by Chris Tomlin) which is a common song that is sung here. There were performances from various singing groups and choirs - the sunday school kids danced to 'One way' (Hillsong). The pastor asked all the first time visitors to stand (there were only a few) so I stood, and everyone standing was given a free ticket to hear Angus Buchan speak on the 26th May, which I think I will go to.

I spent the rest of yesterday with my neighbours. They asked me to stand on a chair and fix the lightbulb in the bathroom which was loose - I pushed it in too hard and it smashed in my hand! I got a bit of a fright and my hand was bleeding. It is okay though, I only have small cuts and it's not that sore anymore. We watched TV and I played with Marne, we hid behind the couch and pretended to shoot each other and kicked the soccer ball down the hallway, and played games like Eye Spy. It was fun and I feel so blessed to have them - it will be hard to say goodbye to them.

Just on a personal note, being in South Africa is making me change my perception about myself. For one thing, I feel tall here whereas back home I feel like I'm short. I've also come to realise how fortunate I am and that I should be more thankful for what I have and for what God has given me. Another thing that I've learnt is to not feel so self-conscious about the way I speak. The other day one of the kitchen staff complimented me on how nice my voice was. I feel like one of the purposes for God calling me here was not just to gain work experience and to serve, but to also grow and become more confident as a person. I believe that is happening.

  1. Hamish, when you got up with Max and Rachel to speak about your first trip to South Africa at TPC, I thought you spoke so clearly and presented so well!

    1. Thanks for your encouraging comment! Yeah I find public speaking hard, but the more I do it becomes not so daunting.

    1. Yeah I wasn't really sure about the last paragraph as I thought it was a bit personal, but felt like I should include it. I think I will go to hear Angus Buchan, I just have to find someone who can take me there.

  3. I can already tell from your emails that you're growing in confidence. I think God is using this opportunity to do something in both of us :) Alister

    1. Yeah I agree. It is good for us to become more independent and for people to get to know us separately :)
